Taiwanese YouTubers (Part 2) • 台灣YouTubers（第二集）

As promised, today I will be continuing my three-part series on Taiwanese YouTubers. Today, I will discuss three different kind of educational channels: RTI English, 阿滴英文 (Adi English), and HOOK.

As with last time, under each YouTube channel I discuss, there are some related channel recommendations I provide because, trying to be as thorough as possible in researching each YouTube channel, this blog post/podcast episode was starting to get a bit too long. I may discuss those related channel recommendations in the future, but there are so many other topics I would like to explore and discuss, and this is already a three-part series, so we’ll see.

Note: my translations of Chinese are in parentheses in most cases.

1. RTI English is Radio Taiwan International’s YouTube channel with content in English. Taiwan Insider and other news clips are the main content posted on RTI English.

   1. Description (found on RTI English's YouTube channel under "About"): Radio Taiwan International is one of the oldest radio stations in the world. We broadcast in 13 different languages all around the world, but now we're coming to you on YOUTUBE! Subscribe to us for DAILY news feature videos, as well as our weekly online news roundup Taiwan Insider. If there's something you want to know about life, news, politics, or society in Taiwan, then look no further than Radio Taiwan International!

   2. Tabs: In addition to popular videos, RTI English has Taiwan Insider (weekly news roundup from Taiwan), RTI English News, On the Radar, Taiwan Explained, Taiwan by Number (all segments from Taiwan Insider), Taiwan Today (interviews between Natalie Hso and other professionals on Taiwan-related topics), Feast Meets West (podcast-like videos about food), and Stories Behind Art (videos explaining different works of art).

   3. Language: RTI English is pretty much completely in English, and auto-generated English subtitles are available. There are occasional segments in Chinese, but in those cases, they do provide English subtitles. RTI also has YouTube channels in Chinese, Dutch, French, Spanish, Russian, Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese, and Korean; RTI really is international.

   4. Recommended: I pretty much exclusively watch Taiwan Insider, which is a weekly 20-minute news show. The hosts, Natalie Hso and Andrew Ryan, are actually both Americans who live in Taiwan, and the host of “Hashtag Taiwan” (which is a segment in Taiwan Insider), Leslie Liao, is also an American who lives in Taiwan. Pretty cool, huh? Taiwan Insider is a great way to keep up with the news in Taiwan; it’s engaging, since there are a number of different segments, it’s not too long, only about 20-minutes or so, and it’s in English, so it’s accessible to those who don’t understand Mandarin Chinese. This past year, I especially enjoyed hearing the perspective of Taiwanese citizens on the American election and learning more about the tense relationship between China and Taiwan and exploring how our government supports Taiwan.

2. 阿滴英文 (Adi English) is a channel created by Adi where he and his sister, Di Mei (she also has her own channel), teach English. Their English skills are truly top notch, possibly even better than my own.

   1. Description: 哈囉我是阿滴，在這個頻道上我會透過各種有趣的主題分享英文。希望能夠讓你重新點燃對英文學習的興趣！偶爾我也會透過影片分享自己的生活。(Hello! I am Adi. On this channel, I will teach English through various interesting topics. I hope I can ignite your interest in English language learning! On occasion, I will share videos about my life.)

   2. Tabs: In addition to uploads and popular uploads, Adi also has four other tabs, including 10句常用英文（10 Commonly Used English Phrases），阿滴家教班（Adi’s Tutoring Class; Adi teaches English to different YouTubers），阿滴英檢PK賽（Adi’s English Challenge; two YouTubers go up against one another to test their English ability），and 2分鐘英語教室（2 Minute English Class）.

   3. Language: Most of the videos are primarily in Chinese with traditional Chinese subtitles, but there are some videos that are completely or partially in English because Adi’s aim is to teach others English.

   4. Recommended: My favorite series Adi did is Adi’s English Challenge. In this series, two YouTubers go up against each other to test their English ability, as I mentioned above. Since I’m pretty much fluent in English, I don’t watch this series to learn English but instead to learn Chinese. Adi will ask questions in Chinese and, most of the time, the answers will be in English. By listening to challengers answer Adi’s questions and explain their answers, I’m able to learn Chinese and gain a better perspective on how people from other cultures interpret English oddities, such as weird phrases like “it’s raining cats and dogs.” It’s so easy to hear someone else make a mistake in English and feel like how they could make such a silly mistake, but in learning Chinese, I’ve definitely become a lot more sympathetic to these sorts of situations. One time in Chinese class, I wanted to say employee, but instead I said park because I mixed up the order of the characters. What a super silly mistake!

3. Hook is a YouTuber with a very interesting variety of content, from food challenge videos to videos about raising her cat to videos in which she tests other people’s knowledge on the history of country from which they originate.

   1. Description: 「HOOK」是一種音樂術語，代表你歌寫得很好，一聽就中；而我取名叫「HOOK」，則是希望我的影片能讓你一看就中。實驗型 ｜時間型｜媽媽比我好笑型 YOUTUBER（HOOK is a type of musical term, expressing you wrote your song well. The moment you hear it, you are into it. I chose to name my channel HOOK because I hope my videos let you get into them the moment you watch them. Experimental type/time type/my-mom-is-funnier-than-me YOUTUBER）

   2. Tabs: In addition to uploads Hook has eight other tabs including 高中讀理組（High School Reading Group），大學歷史系（University History Department; Hook tests the history knowledge of people from different countries），呷飽未（Satiate; week long food challenges），戀愛實驗室（Love Lab），大家來說笑（Everyone Come Laugh），江女士與台灣阿宏（Mrs. Jiang and Taiwan A Hong），我養了一隻貓（I Raised a Cat），業力引爆（Karma Detonation）.

   3. Language: Most all of Hook’s videos are in Chinese with traditional Chinese subtitles.

   4. Recommended: My two favorite series produced by Hook are the history series and week-long food challenge series. In the history series, Hook competes against YouTubers from other countries on their country’s history. In this series, there are two videos (check them out here & here) where Hook goes up against Americans to see whose knowledge on American history is better. Being American and having taken American history, I’ve done pretty okay at Hook’s American history challenges. Another cool thing about these videos, especially the two on American history, is that you are given insight into what Taiwanese learn about American history and how they perceive America and other countries. The week-long food challenge series is fun as well; Hook will choose to eat one type of food every meal for a whole week, such as hamburgers, Japanese food, food for pregnant women, and the like. She weighs herself before and after each challenge too to see if eating that type of food for one week would cause her to gain or lose weight.
